Sage’s range of construction estimating software goes back 40 years. As you might expect there’s been a lot of evolution in that time. Not least in the list of product names, and product variations. There can be a lot to get your head around before even diving into product features, so let’s start with some basic definitions.
As of October 2022, Sage offers 4 construction software packages:
Sage Estimating Software previously known as ‘Timberline Estimating Software’ and prior to that known simply as ‘Timberline Estimating’
Previously known as ‘Sage Timberline’ and prior to that known as ‘Timberline Office’
In a word, yes. Much of the confusion around Sage Timberline Estimating comes from Timberline’s rebranding. Timberline always had two offerings, one for estimating & one for construction accounting. Here’s another way of putting it: Sage Estimating is to Sage 300 Construction & Real Estate, as Timberline Estimating was to Timberline Office.
Sage acquired Timberline back in the summer of 2003, for a reported $91M USD.
While you’ll find some interesting contributions on TrustRadius -with a few mentioning that the software might have become a little long-in-the-tooth - (https://www.trustradius.com/products/sage-estimating/reviews?qs=pros-and-cons#overview)
You might be interested to know that earlier this year we polled 1389 US estimators to discover Sage Estimating (Timberline) still commanded a huge user base. This alone is testament to the power of the software.
At its core, Sage Estimator is about winning more bids. And how might a budding or senior estimator win more bids? By presenting the most accurate, professional cost estimates.
Which is exactly what Sage Estimator aims to do.
Estimators are always looking for ways to increase collaboration when working on complex projects. The introduction of 5D BIM, a collaboration between Sage, Autodesk & eTakeoff aims to get us there. Working with 2D & 3D content to engage stakeholders in a striking new way.
Pre-populated cost databases offer cost information at speed. Access everything from individual site work items to electrical components with ease.

Sage doesn't publish business the Sage Estimating price publicly, and prices will vary depending on your own business needs. Though we will say that Sage’s pricing falls broadly in line with most other competitive offerings.
